When our team isn't competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition, the team is hard at work building robots to bring to events in our city and attending different events to spread the word about STEM and FIRST Robotics.
Our team attends events with our competition robot once the competition season is over or with one of our two outreach robots, the marshmallow/candy shooting robot or the S'mores Bot. Click below to see which events we went to with information about them.

Our team made an appearance at Fluff Festival for the first time on September 23rd, 2017. We were invited to this event and decided to build a robot that shoots marshmallows which we bring each year. We also had coloring pages of the robot for children to bring home in 2017.
Since 2019, we have brought our S'more Bot which is a robot that makes S'mores! |
In 2017, our team participated in Tufts Community Day which was hosted by Tufts University. We brought our marshmallow cannon robot to this event, but this time the robot was loaded with tootsie rolls instead of marshmallows. We also had coloring pages of the robot for children to bring home and color.

STEM Night: 2018
Our team went to STEM night at the Argenziano School. We had an area of the gym blocked off so the robot could drive around. We let the children and their families safely drive the robot around with help from a team member.
We also had a game set up that allows kids to pretend to program a robot along with coloring pages of the 2017 robot. |
Steam Week: 2017 - 2018
Our team was invited to be part of the John F. Kennedy Elementary school STEAM week. STEAM Week takes place in John F. Kennedy Elementary school and it is a week dedicated to showing the students the different parts of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math).
Our team went to an in-school assembly and demonstrated our robot and explained FRC and FIRST to students in grades from kindergarten to 8th grade. |
artisans asylum: 2017, 2019
In 2017, our team went to the robot meet up at the Artisans Asylum. The team ran small demos by showing people how the robot could climb, and deliver game pieces.
We also provided coloring pages of the robot for children to bring home. In 2019, we brought our S'more making robot to sell S'mores at Artisans Asylum's Winter Market. |
Greentown labs: 2016 - 2017
In 2016 our team was invited to Greentown labs in Somerville to demo our competition robot from the 2017 game Stronghold. Here we talked about our success in the 2016 season and FIRST.
In 2017, our team was invited again and we brought our competition robot from the 2017 game Steamworks. Unlike 2016, our robot did not move around. The robot was turned off so people could walk up to the robot and ask questions. |
In 2018, our team was reached out by FIRST Robotics Competition team 2877 The Ligerbots. They invited us to demonstrate one of our team’s robots to their Eastern MA State FIRST Lego League Robotics Competition. We brought our marshmallow/candy shooting robot. We demonstrated our robot along with three other FRC teams.
In 2019, we were invited again. This time we brought our S'mores Bot and gave out S'mores. |
SomerStreets is our city take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other types of activity. In 2017, our team was invited to the SomerStreets event called Monster Mashed-Up theme. It included Halloween themed music, activities, and a parade
We brought our marshmallow/candy shooting robots and we filled the robot up with candy. In 2018, we did the same thing but we also sold our Marshmallow launcher kits. |
hour of code: 2017 - 2018
In 2017, we participated by using our robot to give a simple explanation of how programming the robot works and how we can give it autonomous abilities.
In 2018 we recorded a podcast about STEM. We had our programmer and strategy lead on the podcast and they talked about programming, FIRST Robotics Competition, and non FIRST robotics topics that were related to programming. We also co-sponsored a robot playground where we used Lego mind storms for students to control and program. |
Women in stem: 2018
Our team helped host the first Women in STEM Summit at Somerville High school. Our team participated by bring our marshmallow launching kits for the people to use as an icebreaker activity. Groups of people would put them together by following the instructions. Some team members sold STEMinist and Empower t-shirts for faculty, staff, students, and community members, while the other members helped record the event so those who couldn’t attend the event could watch.
